Vera L. Ernst of Richmond passed quietly into the peace of our Lord on Thursday, February 18, 2021 surrounded by family. The youngest daughter of Bernard (Ben) and Cynthia Niebauer, Vera was born October 3, 1925 in Richmond. She joined the Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II and graduated from the St. Joseph Hospital Nursing Program in Mt. Clemens as a registered nurse. She married Joseph C. Ernst, Jr in 1947 and continued working in various nursing positions as they raised seven children, two of whom died in early childhood.
She was a lifelong member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Richmond and an active volunteer for Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Eta Zeta Pi sorority and many other community organizations. With her husband, Joseph, their contributions to the community were significant, earning them the title of Grand Marshals of the 2006 Richmond Good Old Days. Vera loved to work crossword puzzles, play Scrabble and cards games, read and travel, but her greatest joys in life were her family and taking care of others.
In her passing, Vera rejoins her loving husband of 59 years, Joseph, cherished son and daughter "Little Joe" and Elaine, beloved sister Bernice (Andrejak) and her devoted parents, all having preceded her in death. Embracing memories of their loving mother are her sons Greg (Donna) of Westerville, Ohio, Dan (Jeanne) of Westfield, Indiana and Dennis (Catherine) of Cheboygan and daughters Mary Carol Mrazek (Dale) of Davison and Martha Ward (Terry) of Richmond. Also mourning her loss are 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 3:00-8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. Monday, February 22, 2021 at the Rewalt-Peshek Funeral Home, 68655 Stoecker Lane, Richmond, MI 48062. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m. with a visitation from 10:30 until the time of Mass, Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 68035 Main St, Richmond, MI 48062.
Prior to her passing, in lieu of flowers Vera requested mourners to simply "be nice to someone." The family requests those wishing to make a monetary donation in her name to consider the Richmond Public Library or St. Augustine's Catholic School.
