Robert Eugene Wetzel
July 10, 1918 — February 20, 2017
Robert Eugene Wetzel, age 98 of New Baltimore, previously Richmond, MI passed away Monday, February 20th 2017. He was born July 10, 1918 to Albert and Rose (McNail) Wetzel in Beucoup, IL. On April 4, 1948, Robert married Josephine Pisowicz, remaining happily married for 50 years until her passing on June 28, 1998.
Surviving are their three children: Lark (Henry) Schutt, Susan (Mike) Walsh and Butch (Paula) Wetzel; four grandchildren, Nick (Carole) Schutt, Bill (Lisa) Schutt, Tanya (Glenn) DeVoy and Tracy Walsh; three great-grandchildren, Autumn, Eliot and Jasmine; and two sisters, Dora Kachin and Mary Gensman. Bob was predeceased by his parents Albert and Rose, his wife, Josephine and siblings Howard, Bess, Nadine, Ken and Phil.
Bob was a WWII Veteran, serving in the Army Air Corp from 1941-1945. He was part of the Mighty Eighth Air force, stationed in England, flying with the Pathfinders (the lead planes with radar). He was the radio man, one of the first trained in the use of radar, and occasionally a gunner when needed. He was a life long member of the Amvets and the VFW. He was also an active member and past president of his local UAW.
Bob loved family, fishing, gardening, cooking, canning and all things food. He was a flea market entrepreneur. In fact, he was one of the first to sell at the Armada Flea Market during the live stock auctions. He decided to follow his father's example and became a beekeeper late in life. He enjoyed taking care of his hives and selling the honey. Bob retired from Chrysler‘s in 1978 as a machinist.
He will be dearly missed by all his family and friends.
Visitation will be 2:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at Rewalt-Peshek Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. with a visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service Thursday, February 23, 2017, at Rewalt-Peshek Funeral Home, 68655 Stoecker Lane, Richmond 48062.
