Reverend Roy Syme passed away on April 30, 2013, at the age of 74. He was well prepared for his next journey and his peaceful passing occurred at his home attended by his wife and soul mate, Judy. Roy was born on November 4, 1938 in Detroit, MI. He was a graduate of Detroit Cooley High School, Adrian College, and the Methodist Theological Seminary of Ohio. Upon graduation from Seminary, Roy was assigned to Michigan's Eastern Conference of the United Methodist Church. For the past thirty-nine years, he ministered to the congregations and communities in Farmington, River Rouge, Monroe, Richmond (from 1973 to 1983), Onaway, Millersburg, Clinton, and Lincoln Park. "Reverend Roy", as he was sometimes called, officially retired from the ministry in 2002, but continued his unofficial ministry to the community at the various coffee houses and donut shops he loved to frequent. Roy and Judy resided in Lincoln Park upon his retirement and took pride in purchasing their first home. In addition to his ministry, Roy loved to sing and performed whenever his was asked and sometimes when he wasn't. He enjoyed golfing, movies, and laughed so hard at the corniest things that one feared his teeth would fall out and sometimes they did. He was always an ardent champion of the underdog, those going through tough times, and those who were down on their luck. Not coincidentally, he was a passionate follower of the Lions, Tigers, and most of all his beloved Red Wings. Roy is survived by his wife, Judy, their children; Scott, Juli, and Jenni and their respective spouses-Kim, Mary kay and Ottis, grandchildren; Logan, Keegan, Hannah, Ashley, Lexi and Ottis and his brother, David. He was loved from the cradle to the grave and will be missed by his spouse, children, grandchildren, brother, nieces and nephews, friends and many members of the congregations and communities he ministered to. Memorial contributions may be directed to: Methodist Children's House Society, 26645 Six Mile, Redford, MI. 48240. A memorial service will be on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at noon in the First Methodist Church, 1734 Fort Park, Lincoln Park, MI. Visiting will be from 11:30am to the time of service.
