HARRIETT ELIZABETH VOLKENING 69 of the Village of New Haven died on Monday, December 18, 2006 in her niece's home after suffering from a stroke and diabetic complications. She was born March 15, 1937 in Chesterfield Township, Michigan to the late George and Delia (Donner) Volkening. She was the younger of the two Volkening children. She never married. Her sister Ellen (Volkening) Hay preceded her in death on June 30, 2004. Harriett was employed by Michigan Bell Telephone Company for thirty-eight years. She finally retired in 1994. She was a member of the Zion First United Church of Christ in Mount Clemens and taught Sunday school in the Zion Christian Education department for thirty-eight years. Another of her passions was volunteering to mentor students in the New Haven School District to promote reading skill development. Harriett is survived by Ellen's children; James and Jody Hay of Wales, Gary and Terri Hay of Milan Ohio, Michael and Cheryl Hay of Memphis, Nancy and Ronald Rewalt of Casco and Kristen Hay of Columbus. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at 10:00am at the First United Church of Christ in Richmond. Reverends Jennifer Long and Ronald Cook will officiate. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Christian Education Program of Zion First United Church of Christ or the Hospice of Michigan.
