Grace Smedes
February 25, 1929 — June 26, 2012
Grace Smedes, age 83, of Columbus Township, died Tuesday, June 26, 2012 in St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was born February 25, 1929 in Ameland, Netherland. She married Lewis Smedes, Sr. on May 5, 1951 in Jenison, Michigan. He preceded her in death on August 11, 2006.
"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound..." We can think of no other song that embodies the essence of Grace Smedes and the light she brought into all our lives. Her outpouring of love washed over us daily, bathing us in warmth and compassion, without fail. She was the lighthouse of our lives, guiding us gently along a path of faith. This light, her light, will live in our hearts forever.
She is survived by her children, Andrew Smedes of Tennessee, Lois Smedes & Dan Spooner of Port Huron, Kathleen Atkinson of Warren, Patricia (Martin) Pluszczynski of Roseville, Lewis (Kay) Smedes, Jr. of Florida, Gerald Smedes of Columbus Twp., Annette (Jerry) Garren of Florida, and Jeffrey Smedes of Ohio; sixteen grandchildren and twenty- one great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Lewis, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Janet DeFrance; granddaughters, Rachel Queen, Krista Kramp and Laura Smedes and a sister, Anne Brouwer.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2012 in Columbus Baptist Church. The Reverend Donald Pew will officiate.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday in Rewalt Funeral Home, Richmond and Saturday from 10-10:30 am in the church.
Burial will be in Kittridge Cemetery, Columbus Twp. Pallbearers will be her sons, Andrew, Lewis, Jr., Gerald and Jeffrey Smedes and her grandsons, Johnny Kramp and Steve Queen .
Memorials may be made to the Blue Water Humane Society.
