EDWARD "NEIL" JOHNSON passed away July, 02, 2013 in McLaren Northwest Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, MI. He was 65 years old. Neil was born July 31, 1947 in Mt. Clemens, MI to Edward E. and Norma (Granzow) Johnson. The oldest of six children he grew up in the New Haven area. He went to Lowell country school for kindergarten, first and second grades and graduated from New Haven High School in 1965. Neil started working at General Motors Pontiac Division September 1965 and soon after started training as a toolmaker. He was drafted into the Army in 1967 and served in the signal Corp in Alaska until 1969. After ret8urning from the Army, Neil returned to work at GM and in 1971 met Alice Voigt. They married October 9, 1971 and together had two wonderful children while living in New Baltimore. Neil taught auto mechanics and metal working machine shop at New Haven High for a short time and worked as a toolmaker at GM until 1985 when he went to GM Powertrain Engineering on the "Manhattan" project. Ed "Neil" retired from GM April 1, 1997. He was a Journeyman Toolmaker, Journeyman Metal Model maker and Certified Master Auto Mechanic. Before retiring from GM, Alice and Neil bought a home in Kalkaska where they moved in 1997. He enjoyed deer and small game hunting, computers and HAM radio (N8BAR). In Kalkaska Neil took on a "hobby" job working in the woods planting wildlife food plots which he enjoyed for several years until failing health forced him to quit. He is survived by his wife, Alice of 41 years, son Edward, grandson, John Edward Carnaghi, siblings; James, Lynn Marie (Joe) Floyed, Kenneth (Roxane) and Diane Kay, sister-in-law; Marian (Walt) Euesden, brother-in-law; Mark (Eileen Sharrow) Voigt and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Emberly in 2008, his parents and baby brother, Dale. A memorial service will be on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 10:30am in Rewalt Funeral Home, Richmond. Visiting will be on Friday, July 12th from 3 to 8pm. Memorial contributions may be directed to the wishes of the family.
