Donald G Chartrand

DONALD GENE CHARTRAND age 87 went home to be with our Lord and Savior on Monday, October 29, 2012. Donald was born April 14, 1925 to Genevieve and Eugene "Howard" Chartrand. He moved to Richmond, Michigan at the age of eight. Donald was an exceptional athlete who excelled in all sports in high school and went on to play semi-professional football with the Richmond Eagles. After graduation in 1944, Donald enlisted in the United States Marine Corps (Semper Fi !) and proudly served our country in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He returned home after this service and began working for the Detroit Edison Company. Donald was an employee there for42 years. In 1947 he married the love of his life, Helen Mecke. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Don loved watching sports, particularly the University of Michigan football team, music, reading, debating, traveling and most of all his family. He was blessed with four children, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Donald was predeceased by his mother and father and a sister, Margaret Bednarz. He is survived by his wife, Helen; children; Thomas (Rose) Chartrand, Nancy Scofield, Barbara (Frederick) Schmude and Cynthia (Thomas) Greenia; grandchildren, Tracy (Darla) Wilson, Dana (Josh) Mermell, Jason Scofield, Jeffery Scofield, David Schmude, Katie Schmude, Kenny Greenia and Jessica Greenia and five great-grandchildren, Taylor and Shayna Wilson, Max and Elle Mermell and Samantha Scofield. Cremation has taken place per Donald's wishes. A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 18, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. in the Columbus Bible Church, 1770 Palms Road, Columbus.
