CARL FREDERICK GUSTAV LAICH age 76, a lifelong area resident died unexpectedly on Saturday, June 19, 2010 in Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center. Mr. Laich was born August 23, 1933 in New Haven, MI. to the late Frederick and Anna (Knopf) Laich. He married Hildegarde Bewersdorff in Richmond on July 14, 1956. Carl graduated from New Haven High School in 1951 and attended Michigan State University. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He worked as an electrical engineer before starting his own business, Master Electric Controls, which he operated for thirty-six years. Carl was a very active member of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served on the Endowment Board. He designed and implemented the "ramp project" and took great pride in keeping and maintaining the church grounds. He was an active member of the Richmond Lions Club where he served as past president. Carl gave his time and barn space for the preparation of the food baskets at Christmas. He enjoyed selling White Canes and Goodfellow papers as well as helping with the golf outing. Carl headed the Adopt-A-Highway project for both the Lions Club and St. Peters Church. He personally maintained the stretch of land on the Macomb Orchard Trail from Lowe Plank Road to the City of Richmond. He was a member of the Community Choir and enjoyed deer and pheasant hunting. Carl will be remembered and missed by many for his e-mails and letters to keep old friends and classmates up-to-date with current news. His annual Christmas letter will be a great loss to those who were so fortunate to receive one. He took great pride in keeping his yard at home and his property in Onaway in immaculate shape. His family will always remember the annual canoe trip on the Au Sable River which he organized for the past 27 years. Carl is survived by his devoted wife, Hildegarde, daughters; Cynthia Laich of St. Johns, Carol Laich Clancy of Richmond, Catherine (John) Hicks of St. Clair and Cherlyn (Mark) Prisby of Richmond, his sisters; Eleanor Cosgrove of Traverse City and Nancy Christoloveon of Dearborn, his adored grandchildren to whom some he was a definate father-figure; Ronald Garberson, Crystal Garberson, Heidi Wahl, Eric (Sarah) Wahl, Sarah Clancy, Robert Clancy, Robert Hicks, Laura (Dannie) Rowe, Jina Hamill, Amelia Hamill, Austin Prisby and Anika Prisby, great-grandchildren; Anna and Macallen Wahl and loyal companion "Yeager". A funeral service will be on Wednesday, June 23rd at 10:00am in St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Richmond. Reverends, Gerhardt Doroh and Randy Lett will officiate. Burial will be in Richmond Cemetery. Visiting will be Monday and Tuesday from 3 to 8pm in Rewalt Funeral Home, Richmond. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to St. Peter Lutheran or the Richmond Lions Club.
